As Clarks gradually closed down their shoe factory in Street in the 1990s, the site was converted into a special kind of shopping centre. It all began with Clarks own factory outlet shop. Footwear could be picked up there at bargain prices. The idea was expanded into an entire pedestrian “village” of brand name outlet shops. Laid out with gardens, children’s play areas and cafés, it has proved an attraction in itself.
